Route 161 is a bus route operated by OC Transpo in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Route Details
Route 161 is a local limited service route serving Katimavik, Glen Cairn and Bridlewood areas of Kanata South. It operates more frequently in peak periods, with hourly trips on weekdays in the mid-day and evening and no weekend service.
History
September 5th, 1995
- Will operate hourly and provide a combined 30-minute service on many of the local streets where they run on common sections, improving evening service.
- Sunday service on will be replaced with revised service on Route 165 which Will be extended to serve Bridlewood Drive and Steeplechase on Sundays only.
- The 30-minute service on McCurdy Will be maintained, Palomino will have 60-minute service on new Route 165 and most residents are within walking distance of Route 161 on Eagleson.
- Early morning service to Bridlewood will be provided by Route 165, instead of route 161.
- Route will be shortened to provide a taster trip to Hazeldean Mall and the Town Centre.
September 3rd, 1996
- Will be extended to Morgan's Grant via Teron and Kanata North Business Park.
April 6th, 1997
- With the completion of Terry Fox Road, service was removed from McKinley to operate in a one-way loop from Shirley's Brook to Helmsdale and Terry Fox to March Road.
September 3rd, 2000
- Will replace the service currently provided by Routes 161 and 165 in Bridlewood.
- Service in Morgan’s Grant and Kanata North Business Park will be provided by new Route 160.
- Connections between the communities will be maintained with a convenient transfer at the Kanata Town Centre.
- The route will be a combination of Routes 161 and 165. It will operate in a one-way loop through Bridlewood, and service will be extended along Emerald Meadows as requested by residents, then back via Bridgestone.
- Route 161 will operate every 30 minutes during core hours – a frequency improvement for some customers who currently have only hourly service.
- Service will be removed from Stone Meadow and Bridlepark east of Spur, although once Bridgestone is completed to Bridlepark, buses will use Bridgestone and service will be closer to residents.
September 2nd, 2001
- Route is extended to start/end at Steeplechase and Bridgestone.
- Route no longer serves Emerald Meadows and Bridgestone.
Septemeber 1st, 2002
- Will be rerouted to serve the Eagleson Park & Ride and Kanata Centrum, instead of Kanata Town Centre, via Eagleson and Campeau.
- Route will also provide supplementary trips direct to the Kanata North Business Park during weekday peak periods. The supplementary trips will not serve Kanata Centrum.
- McCurdy and Castlefrank will be served by revised Route 162.
June 22nd, 2003
- The first and/or last trips have been cancelled due to low ridership.
June 27th, 2004
- No weekday service after 11 PM.
September 4th, 2004
- Will be revised to serve Glen Cairn to compensate for the removal of Route 162. From Bridlewood, buses will operate through Glen Cairn on a modified Route 162 pattern to Hazeldean Mall, then via Irwin, Pickford, Kakulu and Castlefrank to Terry Fox Station where transfers can be made to new Transitway Route 96.
- There will be no all-day service on Palomino, Old Colony, McElroy, Rickey, Winchester, McCurdy, Shatner and parts of Eagleson, Pickford and Castlefrank, but most residents will be within reasonable walking distance of service.
- Peak period trips to Kanata North will be provided by revised Route 169.
June 26th, 2005
- Service after 11 PM, Monday to Friday is reinstated.
September 5th, 2005
- Will be revised to travel via Bridgestone instead of Spur.
September 2nd, 2007
- Will be modified in Bridlewood to reduce travel time for residents and provide two-way service along Bridgestone. Buses will run on Bridgestone, Bridlewood and Steeplechase. See Route 164 for additional service options.
- Stonehaven and Grassy Plains will be served by Route 164.
- Service on Equestrian and Harness will be provided by Routes 66 and 169 during peak periods only.
- Service on Sundays will be increased to every 30 minutes between 10 AM and 8 PM.
September 4th, 2011
- Route is reduced to operate in peak periods in both directions, with limited trips on weekdays in the mid-day and evening.
- Weekend service is cancelled.
- Route 164 will provide evening and weekend service on Abbeyhill, Castlefrank, Sheldrake, Glamorgan, and Rothesay.
- Alternative service options for residents on Pickford and Kakulu include Route 118 on Hazeldean, Route 96 on Castlefrank and Route 164 on Eagleson.
- Route 164 will continue to serve Bridlewood.
June 28th, 2015
- Extended to the Smart Centre at Terry Fox and Fernbank.
- Replaces Route 164 through Glen Cairn in the evening.
April 22nd, 2018
- The last southbound trip currently ending at Stonehaven and Bridlewood at 12:40 AM will be extended to complete the loop along Bridlewood and Steeplechase. This will reduce walking distances.
March 30th, 2020
- Due to low ridership from the COVID-19 outbreak, Route 161 will be cancelled until further notice.
- Alternative service is available on Routes 164, 168, 252, 256 and 257.
June 28th, 2020
- Route is reinstated as apart of OC Transpo's Recovery plan.
September 5th, 2021
- New trips will be added to A.Y. Jackson Secondary School.
- New trips will be added to Earl of March Secondary School.
September 4th, 2022
- Several trips will be added or extended on school routes.
