The Rome Transit Department, or RTD, provides public transit service to the city of Rome, Georgia.

History

On October 1st, 1961, the city of Rome took over public transit operations from the Georgia Power Company, acquiring their assets (vehicles + parts) and $300,000 to be spent on the newly created Rome Transit Department.

Since its founding, the Rome Transit Department operated fixed route and school tripper service, though the latter ceased service during, or soon after, February 2019. For Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations, a public transit agency may only operate school tripper service if the routes are 1. Open to and promoted to the general riding public for use, 2. The vehicles are not explicitly designated as school buses, and 3. The school trippers follow a route similar to existing full-time, fixed route service with minimal deviations while also stopping at regular bus stops. The RTD met the first two criteria, but not the third as these school trippers deviated considerably from the regular fixed routes. As such, the RTD was ordered to cease operating the school trippers, sell off the vehicles dedicated to the service (26 at the time of shutdown).
