San Diego Metropolitan Transit System 1001-1045 were 1978 MAN-AM General SG-220-18-2A buses. They were delivered in October 1978. They featured Perkins diesel engines to power their HVAC units.

  • About 25 units (including 1003 & 1042) were bought by a private buyer (possibly a scrap dealer) in the San Diego area, who planned to ship the buses to another country (possibly South Africa). They were parked in a yard near Lindbergh Field/San Diego International Airport. Later the plan was cancelled and the buses were up for sale. No buses were sold and they were eventually vandalized in the yard. The City of San Diego ordered the owner to remove the buses, so the the owner scrapped all of the buses at the yard.
