San Diego Metropolitan Transit System 701-725

San Diego Metropolitan Transit System 701-725 were 1974 Flxible 53102-8-1 New Look buses. They were originally delivered to San Diego Transit System and transferred to MTS in 1975. All units featured a suburban interior configuration without a rear door. Several units received rear doors in the mid-1980s from retired SCRTD Flxible New Look buses, located at Kramers Junction. It was intended to do the entire fleet, until the owner of the buses filed a lawsuit, stopping the attempts to convert the entire fleet into transit mid way. The buses not converted to transits, were retired in 1989 with the arrival of the Ikarus 416 buses. The buses that were converted, were repainted in MTS' new livery and received Transdot signs, which replaced their rollsigns. A few of the buses that were still in suburban configuration, were operated for contractor routes and wore a red stripe.
