The Scania DC9 is a four stroke, liquid cooled, 9 litre diesel engine. It has five cylinders with four valves per cylinder. With five cylinders, Scania believes the operational benefits of the Scania modular combustion concept are used to the fullest. Five cylinders also allows for a shorter block and crankshaft. The engine features two specially designed balancer shafts at the crankshaft to counter the forces generated by the five cylinder firing sequence. This results in the engine runing more smoothly and promotes longer service life.

The DC9 meets Euro 4, Euro 5, and Enhanced Environmentally friendly Vehicle (EEV) standards. To meet Euro 4 the DC9 uses exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) where a controlled amount of exhaust is cooled by the EGR cooler and is recirculated into the engine. This allows a lower combustion temperature and lowers nirogen oxide (NOx) emmissions. To control particulate matter emmissions for Euro 4, the DC9 uses Scania's high pressure injection system.<re>[1]</ref>

While the Euro 4 engines have a displacement of 8.9 litres, the Euro 5 and EEV engines have a displacement of 9.3 litres. To meet Euro 5, the engine features enhanced EGR. A particulate filter may be added to meet EEV.

The Euro 6 DC09 was introduced at the 2012 IAA trade show. It uses selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to lower emissions along with EGR. For 320 and 360 horsepower engines, only SCR is used. The Euro 6 engines also feature a full flow particulate filter. An electrical intake throttle is used for temperature management. The 250 and 280 horsepower engines feature exhaust injection of fuel for extra temperature management during active regeneration of the particulate filter.

In 2017, Scania introduced a new line of Euro 6 engines. The new DC09 features a fixed geometry turbocharger and uses SCR only, without EGR to reduce emission levels. The engine has an upgraded combustion chamber and increased compression ratio which contribute to further fuel savings. The new Euro 6 DC09 is available in 3 models: the 280 horsepower DC09-130, 320 horsepower DC09-126, and 360 horsepower DC09-127.
