The Société de transport de Montréal or Montreal Transit Corporation is the agency that operates buses and the Métro in the urban agglomeration of Montreal, Québec.
History
The Société de transport de la communauté urbaine de Montréal (STCUM) was renamed the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) in 2002. The name change occurred to reflect the merger of the 28 municipalities on the Island of Montreal into one 'mega-city' called Montreal. However, several of these municipalities have since left the mega-city and are now independent towns, but continue to contract with the STM to provide transit service. Funding for the contracted service, is payed by the de-merged municipalities through taxes to what remains of the mega-city of Montreal.
Timeline of transit service in the Montreal area:
- Montreal City Passenger Railway Company (MSR) - 1861-1886
- Montreal Island Beltline Railway (MTR) - (1893-1899)
- Montreal Terminal Railway - (1899-1911)
- Montreal Public Service Corporation (STP) - (1910-1911)
- Montreal Park and Island Railway - (1894-1901)
- Montreal Suburban Tramway and Power - (1904-1910)
- Commission de tramway Montreal - (1918)
- Montreal Street Railway Company - (1886-1911)
- Montreal Tramways Company (MTR and MPIR) - (January 1911 - December 1950)

The Montreal Métro was introduced in 1966 in preparation for Canada's 100th birthday and Expo 67 in Montreal, the second such system in Canada. Instead of traditional steel-wheeled trains, it is a rubber-tired metro, based on technology developed for the Paris Métro; Montreal's system was the first in the world to be entirely rubber-tired.
Transport adapté
The STM offers paratransit service to riders with disabilities that prevent them from using the conventional network. Service is door-to-door and by reservation only. The service is only open to those who qualify according to the Ministère des Transports du Québec’s Paratransit Eligibility Policy.
The STM has a dedicated fleet of 86 minibuses for paratransit service.[3] The vast majority of these vehicles are Girardin Minibus G5 bodies on a General Motors or Ford chassis. The bus fleet is supplemented by contracted taxis.
