Sound Transit route 540 'Kirkland / University District'
540 Kirkland/University District is an express bus route operated by Sound Transit in the Puget Sound area of Washington State. This route is operated by Pierce Transit under contract[1].
It is currently the only Sound Transit route that has been operated by all 3 agencies.
This route was discontinued in March 2020 as a part of the North Eastside Restructure. This service was replaced with King County Metro route 255.
Route Details
This east-west express bus route runs between Kirkland and University District via Montlake. Normal service frequencies are 30 minutes but peak hour, peak direction service is improved to 10-15 minutes. The route does not run on weekends.

- September 2000 - Service introduced with eastbound service terminating at Bear Creek Park & Ride[2]
- February 2008 - All weekend service discontinued and service to Bear Creek Park & Ride replaced by a King County Metro Transit route[2]
- March 2019 - Contract operator transferred from King County Metro to Community Transit (First Transit)
- September 23 2019 - Contract operator transferred from Community Transit (First Transit) to Pierce Transit
- March 2020 - Route terminated, route replaced with King County Metro route 255 and Sound Transit route 544.
