Stanislaus Regional Transit Authority, branded as StanRTA or The S, is a public transit provider serving Stanislaus County in California's Central Valley region. Their services primarily focus on the city of Modesto, but they also provide intercity service within the county. Operations for all aspects of StanRTA's services are contracted out to Transdev.
History
The creation of the Stanislaus Regional Transit Authority was born out of the idea of creating a singular, consolidated transit authority for Stanislaus County.
In late 2019, a county-wide Transit Efficiency and Innovations Study commissioned by the Stanislaus Council of Governments (Stanislaus COG) in 2018 recommended the consolidation the county's four transit agencies, Modesto Area Express (MAX), Stanislaus Regional Transit (StaRT), Ceres Area Transit (CAT), and Turlock Transit, into a single operating authority, though Turlock ultimately declined to join the authority.
Although the four agencies are noted separately, Ceres Area Transit was no longer a distinct entity at the time, as the system had been turned over to Modesto Area Express by the Ceres City Council on July 1st, 2020 following a vote in February 2020.
On January 26th, 2021, the Modesto City Council (MAX) and Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors (StaRT) approved the merger of their two agencies, thus forming the Stanislaus Regional Transit Authority via a Joint Powers Agreement (JPA). On July 1st, 2021, both MAX and StaRT were officially transitioned into StanRTA. In November 2021, the new StanRTA branding and logo was introduced and applied to the 3 2021 Gillig buses, 22105-22107 in December 2021 (Unveiled publicly on December 16th, 2021).
The repainting of existing MAX and StaRT buses continued over the course of 2021-2022. The MAX numbering scheme was retained and all of StaRT's existing buses were renumbered by November 2021, though the new numbers did not start appearing on the former StaRT buses until late summer 2022 when the StanRTA started repainting those vehicles. On January 1st, 2022, the fare systems of MAX and StaRT were integrated.
