Toronto Transit Commission 3000-3027
Toronto Transit Commission 3000-3027 are Mark 1 ICTS cars built from 1982 to 1984 and 1986. They were manufactured by Metro Canada Ltd., a subsidiary of Urban Transportation Development Corporation, in Kingston, Ontario.
The TTC ordered 24 ICTS cars to furnish the Scarborough RT for its opening. An additional 4 cars were ordered shortly after opening in order to increase capacity; these cars (3024-3027) were built and delivered in 1986.
All the cars were rebuilt at Greenwood Shops in the early 2000s. They received a mechanical overhaul and the interior was revised with more perimeter seating at either end of the cars in stead of the transverse layout. The interior also received finishes that were used on the then new T1 subways cars such as flooring and seat inserts.
Another round of refurbishments was deemed necessary in 2015 in order for the cars to be able to continue operating for another decade until the projected opening of the Scarborough Subway Extension. This refurbishment included a new vinyl wrap on the exterior, consisting of a blue base (matching the line colour) with the station names along the top and the line's number prominently displayed on the front and sides. Inside, the cars are receiving new flooring and wall finishes (in light grey). To better accommodate mobility devices, some seats were removed and replaced with leaning post seats. Refurbishment took place between early 2015 and mid-2016. In April 2017, a $6.8 million contract was awarded to Bombardier to repair frame corrosion in all 28 cars, which was discovered during the 2015-16 refurbishment.[1]
By mid-July 2023, 3024 was retired from service and 3016 (renumbered to 3024) was mated to 3025. It is presumed that 3017 was retired at this time too. Following a derailment on July 24, 2023, all cars were removed from service, and Line 3 was shut down. The decision to permanently close the line was made on August 24, 2023, resulting in the retirement of the remaining cars.
