Toronto Transit Commission 9400-9449 were Orion 05.501 buses built and delivered in 1996.

History

Order

These buses were supposed to be part of an order for 100 CNG-powered Orion VI low floor accessible buses. However in an attempt to expedite delivery after production delays, half of the order was built as lift-equipped high floor buses.

The buses were still powered by CNG and used a Cummins L10G engine. The TTC's experiment with CNG fuel was not successful (especially after tank design issues forced this series off the road temporarily in 1997). Unlike the 9200 series Orion VI CNG buses that were retired, the entire 9400 series was converted from CNG to diesel power.

Refurbishments and Conversions

Used as a testbed, 9402 was converted to diesel in 2002 using a Cummins LTA10B engine from a retired D40-90. Following in 2004, 9400 was converted to diesel with a Cummins M11 engine. Both operated in service as diesel-powered units before their rebuild with the rest of the fleet. The bulk of the fleet conversion took place during their rebuild between late 2005-2006, with the final units being released in January 2007.

The rooftop-mounted CNG fuel tanks were removed at Fiba Canning Inc., and the buses were towed to Harvey Shops for rebuild (with the exception of 9400 and 9402). All units were re-engined with Cummins M11 diesel engines. This included 9402 which had its LTA10B engine replaced during rebuild in 2006. The rebuilt buses had their body panels replaced with fiberglass ones that do not corrode. The buses also received bike racks, automated announcements, and CCTV cameras.

Movement and Deployment History

Following conversion to diesel, these buses were scattered around assorted Wilson division routes. Following the arrival of the 8300-8334 batch of buses, these buses were most commonly found on routes 29 Dufferin and 107 Keele North, rarely being found on other Wilson division routes. Towards the end of 2014, these buses began to be sent out on a larger variety of routes, and were most commonly found on routes 106 York University, 107 Keele North, and 196 York University Rocket.

From December 2014 until January 2015, eight buses (9442-9449), were temporarily transferred to Malvern division to offset bus shortages as the 7000-series buses were in the process of retirement.

Retirements

On December 4, 2015, the TTC held a ceremonial final run for the last high floor buses in the fleet. Unit 9411 departed as an extra on route 196 University Rocket from Downsview Station at around 10:30am. Unit 9419 was originally set aside for the occasion, but was substituted for 9411 due to mechanical issues that developed that morning.
