Scarborough Centre Station , most commonly known as Scarborough Centre, is a rapid transit station and bus terminal operated by the Toronto Transit Commission in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located at 290 Borough Drive, inside Scarborough Town Centre.
Station description
The main entrance to the station is inside a walkway between the mall and Scarborough Civic Centre. GO Transit operates out of the east half of the bus terminal and is a major connection point for bus routes heading to Durham Region. There is a ticket agent inside the booth, and stairs, escalators and an elevator connecting the lower level with the bus platforms.
The TTC owns the west half of the bottom 2 layers, plus the entire upper floor for the SRT. Coming in from the main entrance, there are 2 collector booths as well as many turnstiles for large crowds. The concourse consists of a long corridor that spans the length of the station with escalators, stairs and two sets of elevators connecting to the bus terminal below and the SRT platforms above.
The bus terminal has a long enclosed section, continuing from the concourse above it. Outside, bus bays stretch around the enclosed waiting area for the various routes that connect to the station. At the east end of the TTC section, there is a small entrance with a collector booth for the connection between the TTC and GO bus bays.
The uppermost level contains the SRT platforms where eastbound trains serve the south platform and westbound trains serve the north platform. An elevator connects each level, as well as staircases and escalators.
History
Scarborough Town Centre was one of the main driving forces for the construction of the Scarborough RT line, as it's goal was to be connector between the subway at Kennedy and Scarborough Town Centre, which was considered to be the "downtown" of the City of Scarborough. The station itself was one of the last to start construction, as construction progressed north and east from Kennedy.
Starting from opening day, Scarborough Centre was the major transit hub on the Scarborough RT line. 14 bus routes from all corners of Scarborough connect to this station and many commuters pass through it to get to and from work daily. GO commuters from Durham also had a direct connection to TTC rapid transit.
As the second busiest station on the Scarborough RT line (next to Kennedy), it has become the major transit hub of Scarborough. As the area in the vicinity of Scarborough Centre grows in both commercial and residential development, ridership on this line can only increase.
When the Line 4 Sheppard subway was being planned, the eventual terminus was to be at Scarborough Centre. It was cut back to Don Mills Station, but the plan was still to connect all the way to Scarborough Centre. Express bus 190 Scarborough Centre Rocket was implemented to fill this void and it exceeded expectations soon after it commenced operations. However, with Transit City's Sheppard East LRT staying on Sheppard Avenue instead of connecting to Scarborough Centre, this plan now seems unlikely, and the main connection between lines appears to be an extension of the Scarborough RT to Sheppard Avenue/Markham Road.
Future
Scarborough Centre RT Station will be replaced by a new station as part of the Line 2 Bloor-Danforth extension. As of 2022, station entrances are planned for McCowan Road between Triton Road and Progress Avenue. A bus terminal is planned on the vacant land off Grangeway Avenue near the current McCowan RT Station.
An early proposal had access to the station around Triton Road and Borough Drive. A large bus terminal would be located on the east side of McCowan Road between Corporate Drive and Triton Road. By 2018, a proposal showed that the station would be accessed by a new building on Triton Road at McCowan Road. Progress Avenue would be joined with Borough Drive and pass over this part of the station giving another access point. A large bus terminal would take up the footprint of the current bus terminal. Access would be maintained with the Scarborough Town Centre via the bus terminal. The subway tracks` and platform would be under Progress Avenue.
