Toronto Transit Commission W100-W209 are StarTrans Bus Senator SII LF bodied buses on Ford F-450 chassis, also known as Dallas Smith Corporation's Friendly Bus, built between 2009 and 2010.

History

Order

In December 2007, the TTC issued a request for proposals for low floor paratransit buses to replace the existing ELF fleet. Two submissions were made: American Bus Products Inc. (Startrans) and Creative Carriage Ltd. (Arboc Mobility). The order was placed in 2008 with American Bus Products for 110 buses for 2009 to 2010 with an option of adding 88 more between 2011 and 2014.[1] W100 arrived as a pilot bus in the spring of 2009, and deliveries of the rest of the units followed beginning in late 2009 and continuing until late 2010.[2].

These buses feature telematics system from INIT, including GPRS and GSM for data and voice communications, and CAD/AVL system which allow dispatchers to view real-time and historical locations of vehicles.[3] The telematics interface along with a bus kneeling control are in the driver's station. The buses sport reversing camera with backup radar sounding system, automatic fire suppression system, manual and automatic battery disconnect, and all-LED interior and exterior lighting systems. Inside, antimicrobial finishes are used on interior stanchions, and there are larger mobility device positions, foam grab pads, adjustable passenger wall grab handles, and CCTV cameras.

Community Bus

W100 was refitted for Community Bus service in late 2010. It received additional seating and a TwinVision Silver Smart destination signs. By the end of 2012, W102 through W106 were similarly converted for Community Bus service. This allowed for the retirement of the aging Orion IIs, 9700-9705 and 9706.

By September 2017, W101 and W107 were converted for Community Bus for the addition of an extra bus on the 400 Lawrence Manor and 404 East York routes during a nine month pilot improvement.

Rebuild

Beginning in 2016, this series began a refurbishment program in order to continue providing service. Refurbished buses received a mechanical overhaul, frame work and new body panels, as well as a fresh coat of paint and new decals. The rebuild program was ended in 2017 after 26 units were completed, with new buses purchased instead.

Some additional buses that were not part of the refurbishment program received a body overhaul. Work done during the body overhaul included frame repairs, new side panels, and repainting into the new livery based on the LFLRV streetcars. These buses did not receive the same mechanical overhaul as the 26 rebuilt buses. The Community Bus fleet also received body overhaul work while being repainted.

Retirement

W128 was the first unit to retire, after it suffered an engine fire that was deemed uneconomical to repair. The first official retirements began in December 2018, after delivery of the first 80 CS-2 vehicles was completed. Units that did not receive a refurbishment or body overhaul will generally be the first to retire. As of November 2019, 57 units have been retired.

Beginning in February 2021, four units were reassigned from Wheel-Trans duty to act as employee shuttles for maintenance and track workers. This was due to restrictions on the number of employees allowed in regular maintenance vehicles (i.e. pickup trucks or vans) under COVID-19 restrictions. Reassigned vehicles had all Wheel-Trans lettering removed, although they retained their TTC livery and logos.
