Route Details

This route provides local service for Line 1 Yonge-University and services Yonge Street between Front Street and Steeles Avenue. It also provides service on Yonge Boulevard. Northern terminals include Steeles Avenue for branches 97A and 97B, and Eglinton Station for branch 97C. Southern terminals include St. Clair Station for branches 97A and 97B, and Union Station for branch 97C. Branch 97C operates during the rush hour on weekdays only.

History

February 14, 1999 - Due to construction on the Sheppard subway line affecting Yonge Street, the northern segment of the route is temporarily split into route 197.

October 14, 2001 - With a majority of the construction complete at the Sheppard and Yonge intersection, through service along Yonge Street to Steeles Avenue returns.

November 23, 2008 - Moved to Wilson Division.

October 12, 2014 - Due to a system-wide reorganization of route branch designations, branch 97 operating between Davisville Station and Steeles is redesignated 97F.

May 8, 2016 - In order to maintain service reliability during long-term construction at the Yonge/Sheppard intersection, branch 97B is shortened to terminate at York Mills Station, and branches 97D and 97F are replaced with branch 97C operating between Lawrence Station and Steeles Avenue. No off-peak service along Yonge Street is provided south of Davisville Station.

October 7, 2018 - With the completion of construction at the Yonge/Sheppard intersection and to improve service reliability for customers, branch 97C is replaced by branch 97F and is extended south to terminate at Davisville Station, and branch 97B now operates via Yonge Boulevard in both directions. Weekday midday branch 97D operating between St Clair Station and York Mills Station is eliminated.

November 21, 2021 - Branch 97A operating between Davisville Station and York Mills Station is eliminated. All day everyday service on Yonge Street between Davisville Station and Steeles Avenue is operated by branch 97F with branch 97B providing a peak-period extension to Queens Quay. All buses in both directions operate via Yonge Boulevard.

March 27, 2022 - Route is adjusted to restore service along Yonge Street between Yonge Boulevard and York Mills Road. Branches 97C (Queens Quay - Steeles) and 97D (Davisville Station - Steeles) are introduced operating direct along Yonge Street.

October 8, 2023 - Route is simplified. All peak-period service south of Front Street to Queens Quay is eliminated. Peak service will now operate between Union Station (Front Street East) and Eglinton Station on the 97C branch. Off-peak service is expanded to operate between Steeles Avenue and St. Clair Station on branches 97A and 97B, with branch 97B serving Yonge Boulevard. Branches 97D and 97F are eliminated.

May 12, 2024 - To improve wayfinding, the southern terminus for 97C buses is changed from Front Street to Union Station.
