Burrard is a SkyTrain station in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Station Details

Located at Burrard Street & Dunsmuir Street in the heart of Downtown Vancouver, Burrard Station provides easy access to multiple downtown office buildings in Vancouver's Financial District. Two of Burrard's entrances are connected to adjacent office buildings. One entrance to Royal Centre with the Royal Bank Tower and the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The other connects Bentall Centre and Bentall Towers 1 to 4. Park Place, located across Burrard Street from the station is not connected, although an entrance was considered during the planning and construction phase of the station. Originally, Bentall Centre was the only office complex connected to the station. Royal Centre was added a few years later.

Burrard Station is a popular attraction during the springtime due to the number of cherry blossom trees planted around the station.

Upon entry into the station from 4 of the 5 entrances into the upper concourse, passengers are greeted by the grand size of the roof structure of Burrard Station with the trees of Art Phillips Park serving as a backdrop behind the ticket machines. The upper concourse also provides access to a side staircase that's open only when 1 of the 3 escalators is closed for maintenance.

The lower concourse provides access to the Waterfront-bound platform. The faregates are located at this level. Burrard Station has the most faregates in the system. Located below the Waterfront-bound platform is the King George or Production Way–University-bound platform. This stacked design is due to the diameter and design of the Dunsmuir Tunnel, which opened in 1933 and was renovated and altered for SkyTrain between 1983 to 1985.

In the tunnel directly west of the station is a tunnel shaft that provides fresh air into the tunnel, in addition to a maintenance staircase connecting the two tunnel levels.

As part of TransLink's Proximity Enabled Accessible Entrances project, proximity sensors were to be installed at all accessible faregates at Burrard in 2017 as part of a trial before a system-wide installation.

The station structure is designed to imitate a Victorian-era British train station with its peaked glass roof. Burrard is the flagship station of the initial 15 SkyTrain stations and was designed by Alan Hart of Allen Parker and Associates[1] in partnership with Architektengruppen U-Bahn. The station was also designed to give the illusion it was carved out of the ground, with heavy use of granite throughout.

Future Expansion

In 2016, a proposal was made to build a Park Place entrance to ease congestion as 4 of the 5 Burrard Station entrances lead to the same corridor and concourse. The proposal called for the possible construction of a new stationhouse with deep vertical elevator shafts and a new tunnel to connect with the existing station concourse. The complexity of underground utilities and parkades made escalators unfeasible.[2]

The elevator-only approach was later found to be unfeasible not only because of the limited space, but that the cost of an elevator-only concept for a second entrance would be higher than the $75 million budget allocated for Burrard upgrades. TransLink shifted its focus on reconfiguring the original entrance and station structure instead with preliminary artist renderings released in early 2021.[3]

The planned expansion and reconfiguring would see the closure and demolition of the escalator and stairs leading up from the upper concourse to Burrard Street as the space that it currently occupies will be covered over as part of an expansion of the street plaza. Two new escalators connecting the upper and lower concourses will occupy this space as well. The station structure will also be partially demolished on this portion. The primary street entrance will be moved closer to Melville Street near the current elevator and will have up and down escalators and stairs. All escalators will be replaced and an additional elevator will be installed.

On July 13, 2021, TransLink announced a timeline and more details for this project. Work will commence in 2022 and Burrard will be closed for approximately two years due to the scale of the project and for work to be completed at a lower cost (savings of $35 million of the station was to remain partially open), for passenger safety and for faster completion. The entire project is expected to cost $72 million.[4]

In March 2022, TransLink postponed construction due to "higher than anticipated construction bid prices."[5]

In October 2022, TransLink announced the 'rescoped upgrade' of the station which will "replace all five escalators at Burrard SkyTrain Station, with completion expected by Spring 2024" but not upgrade any other station components.[6]

Bus Routes

Throughout Burrard Station's history, the station has served as a major transit hub. Before the September 2002 changes, the station served as a terminus for Burnaby and Tri-Cities suburban buses, North Shore services, and other Richmond and South of Fraser services. Burnaby and most Tri-Cities services were cancelled or moved east to Lougheed Town Centre Station. After the September 2009 service changes, Richmond and South of Fraser services were moved to Bridgeport Station or cancelled. Burrard Station was also the northern terminus of the 98 B-Line. After the December 2016 changes, the remaining suburban routes towards the Tri-Cities were cancelled or shortened, leaving only local services and North Shore routes connecting at Burrard Station.

All numbered bays are located along Burrard Street. Bays 2 and 3 are located on Dunsmuir Street between Burrard and Thurlow streets and Bay 4 on Thurlow Street.

North Shore services via the Second Narrows Bridge are at Bay 2. North Shore services via the Lions Gate Bridge are located along W. Georgia Street and stops are not assigned bay numbers.
