Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority 1001 was a New Flyer XE40 bus built in 2016. It was delivered on September 26, 2016, and entered service on May 25, 2017. It is the first electric bus in the fleet for WMATA.
It mostly operated on route M4 during the AM rush-hour and on routes N2/N4 during the PM rush-hour, and had ventured onto other bus lines most notably the 33 and L2.
The bus made its last run on the M4 on January 3, 2023, during the PM rush. It was then displayed at the 2023 Washington Auto Show before ultimately being sidelined indefinitely. It was returned to New Flyer around 2024.
