The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, or WMATA, operates transit service in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, which also includes parts of Maryland and Virginia.

History

WMATA was formed in 1967 to plan, develop, and operate public transportation in the Washington, DC, metro area.

The agency began bus operations in 1973 by acquiring four private bus companies in the area:

  • 1029, 1076-1077, 1078-1079, 1106-1107, and 1170-1171 were written off due to accidents
  • 1028 became a feeler car following 1029 being wrecked in 1982
  • 1000-1001 were preserved.
2000-2075 1981-1983 Breda 2000-Series Alstom ONIX 2000 AC Traction with IGBT Inverters
  • Rehabilitated 2002-2004 by Alstom.
  • 2016-2017 were converted to serve on revenue collection trains.
  • Retired on May 10, 2024.[14]
  • 2000-2001, 2038-2039, 2058-2059 apart of final revenue run on October 19, 2024.
4000-4099 1991-1994 Breda 4000-Series Westinghouse 1462 DC motors with chopper controls
  • All units retired by July 2017.
  • 4000-4001 were preserved.
  • Some have been donated for emergency training purposes.
5000-5191 2001-2004 CAF-AAI 5000-Series Bombardier Mitrac DR1000 AC Traction with IGBT Inverters
  • 5066-5067 and 5152-5153 were written off following accidents
  • 5000-5001 were preserved.
  • 5058-5099 were sold to a private investor and were converted into a bar in Northeast DC
  • 5112-5113 will be donated to an unknown transit agency.
  • All retired by October 17, 2018.
