The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, or WMATA, operates transit service in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, which also includes parts of Maryland and Virginia.
History
WMATA was formed in 1967 to plan, develop, and operate public transportation in the Washington, DC, metro area.
The agency began bus operations in 1973 by acquiring four private bus companies in the area:
- Alexandria Barcroft & Washington Transit Company (AB&W).
- DC Transit System
- Washington Marlboro & Annapolis Motor Lines (WM&A)
- Washington, Virginia and Maryland Coach Company (WV&M)
