Whitby Transit
Whitby Transit was the public transit agency serving the town of Whitby, Ontario.
History
In 1976, Whitby Town Council approved expanded bus service by Charterways Transportation in the town on a trial basis. The service, operating from April to the end of the year, served the Whitby Industrial Park, Brock Road and the area west to Garrard Road.[1] After further study and debate, Council approved a municipally managed transit system with operations contracted to Charterways. Whitby Transit began operations on April 1, 1980.[2]
In November 1990, Trentway-Wagar Coach Lines assumed operations of Whitby Transit. After submitting a lower bid than Charterways, the contract was awarded to Trenway-Wagar. They continue to operate bus service in Whitby including post-formation of Durham Region Transit (see below).[3][4]
Whitby Transit, along with the Oshawa Transit Commission and Ajax Pickering Transit Authority were merged to form Durham Region Transit on January 1, 2006.
