York Region Transit 201-223 (2nd)
York Region Transit 201-223 were Van Hool AG300 buses built and delivered in 2005 and 2006. They were originally used on Viva service and were numbered 5201-5225. After meeting their expected 12 year lifespan, they were converted for conventional YRT service in order to accommodate ridership growth on routes 20 Jane and 90 Leslie. 23 of the original 25 VIVA units were converted for YRT service, with the remaining two VIVA units becoming parts buses.
The buses were painted in YRT's three-tone blue livery. Inside, the operator's cab was modified similar to the 20 A330 buses that were converted in 2013. The cab door had to be removed to fit the farebox and Presto unit. A Presto reader was fitted on a stanchion just below the windshield. The passenger seats were upholstered in fabric similar to that used on YRT buses up to 2009.
Despite being converted for conventional service in 2017-2018, the units had already exceeded their 12-year lifespan at the time of conversion. They were withdrawn beginning in Summer 2020, as the 2000-series New Flyer XD60 articulated buses began entering service.
In March 2021, four retired units (203, 210, 217 & 222) were repurposed for use as mobile vaccination clinics for York Region, and parked at Canada's Wonderland to serve as part of the drive-through COVID-19 vaccination clinic set up on-site. They had all of their YRT markings removed except for fleet numbers at the front. Later, units 210 & 217 were used for another mobile drive-through clinic at Emily Carr Secondary School during the Summer of 2021.
This is the second use of this number series, as the 200-series had previously been in use by SLF-235 units 201-223.
