York Region Transit 5101-5160
York Region Transit 5101-5160 are Van Hool A330 buses built and delivered in 2005 and 2006. They are painted in Viva colours, and are used exclusively in Viva service. They were ordered to launch the Viva service in September 2005. They were the only order of 40ft Viva buses, as YRT has announced that all future Viva purchases would be 60ft in length.
These buses operate primarily on Viva Orange and Viva Yellow, and occasionally on Viva Purple.
Television screens were installed on all units in 2006, but fell into disuse by 2008. Some units were restarted by 2009, with the new network provided by Byte Media, but they were all eventually dismantled after.
Refurbishment
In 2010, York Region budgeted for a cosmetic "refresh" of these buses beginning in 2011, starting with the more heavily used AG300 units. Refurbished buses feature bodywork and repainting, rebuilt powertrain, reupholstered seats, and new flooring. Work was accelerated during the 2011-2012 strike.
Identifying features of refurbished buses include a blue-coloured rear taillight cover (instead of red) and yellow interior floor accents (instead of black).
In late 2012 and 2013, 20 units underwent refurbishment and conversion for conventional YRT service, to replace 001-014, 9701, 9703, and 9931-9933. Units refurbished for YRT service featured a rebuilt powertrain, bodywork and repainting into YRT colours, new seating, a modified driver's compartment to permit installation of a farebox and Presto unit, and were renumbered to 501-520.
Beginning in late 2023, 16 of the remaining Viva-branded units underwent an additional refurbishment and conversion for conventional YRT service. These additional conversions were renumbered to 521-536.
