Route 42 served The Bridle Walk, Stonebridge Drive, Manhattan Drive, South Unionville Avenue, Castan Avenue, and Helen Avenue.
This route served the Berczy, Markville, and Village Green-South Unionville communities. It also served Markville Secondary School, Centennial GO Station, Centennial Community Centre, and Markville Shopping Centre. One trip in the morning and one in the afternoon also served Bill Crothers Secondary School.
Route 42 connected to Viva Green and Viva Purple at McCowan/Highway 7 and University VIVAstation, as well as Viva Pink at University VIVAstation and Unionville GO Station.

Historic Branches
History
Plans for route 42 have existed for many years, always appearing on maps for proposed service changes but never being implemented. Route 42 Bridle Walk was approved to be implemented in 2008, but due to limited vehicle resources, implementation of this initiative was deferred pending vehicle availability.
Due to The Bridle Walk concerns, YRT evaluated the routing to either operate via The Bridle Walk or make a diversion to service Wilfred Murison Avenue and Stonebridge Drive. The routing via Wilfred Murison Avenue and Stonebridge Drive would be beneficial since development is denser than along The Bridle Walk. Also, Stonebridge Drive is a wider street than The Bridle Walk. However, the intersection at Stonebridge and 16th Avenue is not signalized. There were safety concerns about making left turns onto Stonebridge Drive. This intersection was not scheduled for the installation of traffic control signals, but a traffic study was conducted in October 2008 for the purpose of applying the region's traffic signal policy to determine if the intersection warrants traffic control signals. Prior to implementing route 42, YRT hosted a public meeting on December 1, 2008.
- September 8, 2009 - Route 42 had started appearing on the TTC ride guides as early as June 2009, although this route was not implemented at the time. It was finally implemented on this date with the route name being 'Berczy-South Unionville' instead of 'Bridle Walk'. In YRT documentation, this route still had the name 'Bridle Walk', but it was changed shortly after.
- December 2012 - Route 42 was declared fully accessible.
- July 2, 2013 - Route 42 was renamed from "Berczy-South Unionville" to "Berczy".
- August 31, 2014 - 4 afternoon trips were replaced by route 204.
- June 26, 2016 - Route is revised to operate along William Berczy Boulevard between 16th Avenue and Wilfred Murison Avenue instead of Stonebridge Drive.
- April 5, 2020 - Service on route 42 was temporarily suspended in response to ridership changes due to COVID-19.
- September 3, 2023 - Route will not return to service and is permanently discontinued. Service will be redistributed to other routes with growing traveller demand.
