• September 4, 2001 - Richmond Hill Transit was merged into YRT in January 2001 and route 81 was transferred over from Richmond Hill Transit's route 1A and 1C. On this date, route 1A Mill Pond was renumbered 81A and route 1C Beverly Acres was renumbered 81C in order to avoid route number duplication across the York Region Transit network.

• September 3, 2002 - Branch 81A is made it's own route: route 80. Branch 81C is redesignated as 81.

• May 9, 2004 - Route 81 was discontinued, with service over a similar routing provided by the new route 241.
