The route serves the Oak Ridges, Inspiration, Mill Pond, Thornhill Woods, and Thornhill communities. They also serve St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic High School, Lebovic Leisure Centre, Westmount Collegiate Institute, Vaughan City Playhouse, Promenade Terminal, and Centerpoint Mall.

The route connects to Viva Purple at Atkinson Avenue and Promenade Terminal. It also connects to Viva Blue and Viva Pink during peak periods at Yonge/Steeles and the Finch GO Bus Terminal.

Service among Bathurst St. first operated in the form of Richmond Hill Transit route 8. It ran from Promenade Terminal to Bernard Terminal via Elgin Mills Road.

• September 4, 2001 - Richmond Hill Transit was merged into YRT in January 2001 and on this date, the route was renumbered from 8 to 88 in order to avoid route number duplication across the York Region Transit network.

• September 3, 2002 - To serve the student demand, the route is extended north along Bathurst Street to 15th Sideroad to serve the Seneca College King Campus. The route is also extended in the south to the Finch GO Bus Terminal via Steeles Avenue West and Yonge Street. Buses continue to operate via Promenade Terminal.

• August 31, 2003 - During weekdays peak periods, alterate trips operate via Clark Avenue West and Hilda Avenue to Steeles Avenue West.

• January 2005 - Full weekday service to Seneca King commenced.

• September 4, 2005 - Peak-period service along Clark Avenue and Hilda Avenue is replaced with the new route 23.

• April 27, 2008 - Saturday service extended to serve Seneca College King Campus.

• November 16, 2008 - Route 88E was introduced, following the same routing as local route 88 with limited stops at Elgin Mills Road, Major Mackenzie Drive, Rutherford Road/Carrville Road, Promenade Terminal, Steeles Avenue West, and Yonge Street.

• September 6, 2009 - Route 88A was introduced, operating between Finch Terminal and Elgin West Community Centre located at Bathurst Street and Shaftsbury Avenue. Despite the introduction, this branch has been in service since 2003, though simply only known as route 88.

• November 14, 2010 - All weekday service on branch 88A is converted to branch 88 service to provide improved weekday service between Finch GO Bus Terminal and Seneca College King Campus.

• February 2012 - Route 88E was declared fully accessible.

• December 2012 - Routes 88 and 88A was declared fully accessible.

• February 23, 2014 - Route 88E was discontinued, and all the limited stop trips were converted to regular route 88 trips.

• June 26, 2016 - As proposed in the 2016 Annual Service Plan, Sunday service to Seneca College King Campus is introduced. As a result, the short-turn branch 88A is eliminated.

• 2019 - A new branch 88B was proposed, extending service north to Newmarket via Newmarket GO Bus Terminal during rush hours.
