The Canadian Pacific Railway Budd cars were built in 1954-1955 for service on the transcontinental Canadian, then trains 1, 2, 10 and 11.
VIA Rail
In 1977 the majority of cars passed to VIA Rail when it took over Canadian passenger rail operations. When the coaches were remanufactured in the 1990s, HEP capability was added. All cars were renumbered into the 8000-series upon outshopping.
18 additional coaches were outshopped in 1993-1994, numbered 8130-8147 - these are ex-American cars that were changed to look outwardly identical to the ex-CPR cars. They feature the same interior configuration.
These cars are currently being rebuilt by CAD Railway Industries in Montreal, QC. Upgrades include reupholstered seats in orange with brown-grey headrests, armrests, and leg-rests, new lighting, and ventilation upgrades. Rebuilt cars are painted in a livery similar to rebuilt HEP2 cars; a dark-teal trim around the windows and a yellow stripe above the windows, reminiscent of the livery of the Delaware and Hudson Railway.
Coach
'Chateau' Sleeper
CPR 14201-14229 were built from July to November of 1954 by Budd. They each have three sections, eight roomettes, one drawing room and three double bedrooms. Some cars have been converted to 'Prestige' sleeping cars for premium service on the Canadian. These can be identified by a grey strip above the windows, as well as a 5-digit fleet number with an extra 8 added to the original VIA Rail number.

'Skyline' Dome
The 'Skyline' cars originally featured coach seats at the vestibule end of the train, and a booth area underneath the dome. In the 1980s, VIA turned the cars around and rebuilt them, replacing the coach seats with a dining area and the booth with a take-out counter. All the dome seats (with the exception of the rear row) were turned around.
By the end of 2011, four Skyline cars were refurbished. They received a contemporary interior with a taupe brown and olive colour scheme replacing the grey and pink-orange scheme. Interior components such as seats and chairs, wall coverings, lights, floors, and windows were overhauled or replaced. The cars' mechanical systems which included the water and air systems, HVAC, couplers and draftgear, and heat tracing system were overhauled as well.

Baggage Car
CPR 3000-3017 were built as baggage-dormitory cars between December 1954 and January 1955 by Budd. In 1977, when VIA took over Canadian passenger rail service, they got the CP coaches. The former CP coaches that survived had their dormitories removed in 1980-1981 by VIA, then were remanufactured between 1990 and 1993 by AMF Technotransport in Montréal.
6 additional baggage cars were remanufactured and outshopped in 1993-1994, numbered 8618-8623 - these are ex-Union Pacific Budd-built cars that have slab sides rather than the standard fluting. They are primarily used on Corridor services, and have pass-through MU and communications cables that the other HEP baggage cars lack.

'Park' Dome
CPR 15401-15418 were built from July to October 1954 by Budd. Each Park car has one drawing room and three double bedrooms. In addition there is a bar and seating for 24 in the dome and a lounge at the rear.
In 2011, VIA Rail embarked on refurbishing four Park cars. They received a contemporary interior with an ochre and olive colour scheme replacing the teal scheme. Interior components such as seats, wall coverings, floors, and windows were overhauled. The cars' mechanical systems which included the water and air systems, HVAC, couplers and draftgear, and heat tracing system were overhauled as well.
Some Park cars have been rebuilt into 'Prestige' Park cars. These cars feature an accessible cabin, a Prestige cabin, as well as a thoroughly-reconfigured mural lounge and bullet lounge.
