Cummins L9
The Cummins L9 is an 8.9 litre, inline six cylinder diesel engine available for medium-duty trucks and urban transit buses. Introduced at the National Truck Equipment Association Work Truck Show in March 2016 and available beginning in 2017, the L9 is the successor to the Cummins ISL.[1]
New for Cummins' 2017 line of engines is a Single Module aftertreatment system which combines the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems into a single canister. The more compact, lighter emissions control systems, according to Cummins, also boast greater thermal efficiency for improved engine operation.[2] Unique to the transit applications, the L9 will continue to use the Modular Aftertreatment System.[3]
The Cummins L9 features enhanced on-board diagnostics (OBD) that ensure emissions stay within the EPA limits as well as enhanced electronic controls. Cummins has also added a particulate matter sensor. The engine meets EPA 2016 and GHG 2017 regulations. It boats a 15 percent improvement in fuel economy over the 2007 ISL.[2] Engine electronic controls and optimized combustion formula help achieve Euro 6 Phase-C compliance.[4] Further electronics refinement allowed the L9 to meet the more stringent Euro 6 Phase-D regulations in 2019. Phased-D required reduced Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) emissions during lower speed city operations, as well as under cold engine start conditions. Real-world, on-road testing was also required during testing.[5]
