Dallas Area Rapid Transit, or DART, is the transit agency for Dallas, Texas and the suburbs of Addison, Carrollton, Cockrell Hill, Farmers Branch, Garland, Glenn Heights, Highland Park, Irving, Richardson, Rowlett, Plano and University Park.

History

The Dallas Transit System (DTS) was the publicly owned mass transit service operated by the City of Dallas, Texas, from 1964 to 1988.

Prior to DTS, the company was formerly known as

DART was created on August 13, 1983 as a regional replacement for the Dallas Transit System, though formal acquisition of the Dallas Transit System wasn't complete until 1988. [1]

Bus

DART numbers its bus routes according to the type of route. The entire DART Bus Network was reorganized on 24 January 2022 as part of the DARTZoom program.

Frequent Route Network (Routes 1-99)

Local routes with seven-day service, weekday peak frequencies of 15 minutes, mid-day frequencies of 15-to-20 minutes and off-peak frequencies of 15-to-30 minutes. Routes 1, 3, 5 and 9 offer 15 minute mid-day frequencies seven days a week; all other Frequent Route Network lines operate with every 20 minutes during mid-day hours.

Rail Shuttle Routes (Routes 500-599)

These routes are primarily operated in the event of inclement weather or other service disruptions. The route numbers are publicized on external documents, however, despite being primarily internal identifiers, they may be displayed on bus headsigns. Routes listed below are used for full rail network shutdowns (Inclement Weather Operating Scenario 2) due to inclement weather (stations in bold are served by shuttle buses in case of a partial rail network shutdown (Inclement Weather Operating Scenario 1) where service is limited to within the I-635/LBJ Freeway loop):

Former Numbering Scheme

This was the previous DART route numbering scheme through 23 January 2022:

  • 1-199: Local routes, serving Downtown Dallas (100-series routes operated on portions of freeways/tollways to/from Downtown Dallas)
  • 200-series: Express routes, limited-stop service generally using 40-foot vehicles with reclining seats (though "local" buses will occasionally be spotted on these routes and vice versa)
  • 300-series: "Suburban" routes, local routes originating at a transit center
  • 400-series: Crosstown routes, local routes connecting widely separated areas
  • 500-series: Rail feeder routes, local routes originating at a rail station
  • 700-800 series: Specialized shuttle routes [1] which primarily recieve third-party funding

  • Many units (throughout various DART orders) were bought by Intermountain Coach in Colorado Springs, CO. Some units were spotted under their possession and on ebay as late as summer 2009.[6]
    • 1 unit (1985 model) was bought by a private owner for an RV conversion in South Dakota in summer 2009. It was sold or scrapped in 2012.[7]
  • Some units (1985 models) were bought by Colonial Coach Lines/Colonial Bus Sales in Mt. Prospect, IL. They became their 500 series.
    • 518 (Lic. Plate: 47 085 H; reused on another bus), 530 & an unknown unit were listed for sale in 2004.[8][9][10] 1 unit was sold in 2004 while the other 2 units likely remained for sale for years. 518 was found abandoned (possibly since 2012) and fully seated in Indiana in January 2023.[11]
    • 524 was spotted at on the property in August 2011.[12]
