GO Transit operated a fleet of 123 single-level cars, built by Hawker Siddeley Canada and designated RTC-85. Thirty-two coaches, eight cab cars, and nine self-propelled cars (designated RTC-85SP) were ordered for the launch of service. They were derived from a series of cars developed for the TTC and the Expo Express in the upcoming Expo '67. The self-propelled cars (D700-D708) were de-motored by 1975 and used as conventional cab cars.[1]
The design firm Gagnon-Volkus, tasked with developing GO Transit's image and branding, promoted an interior which was a departure from existing commuter stock. The single-level cars used bucket seats that emulated those in automobiles arranged back-to-back. Florescent lighting, placed behind full width diffusers added to the contemporary look. The interior color pallet consisted of cream, brown, and black.[1]
