Greyhound USA (legally Greyhound Lines, Inc.) is a major inter-city bus carrier in the United States founded in 1914. They provide service across the United States and into Canada and Mexico.

Greyhound USA has three operating subsidiaries in the United States: Valley Transit Company which serves the Texas-Mexico border, Crucero USA which serves southern California and Arizona into Mexico, and Americanos USA which serves areas in Mexico from Texas and New Mexico.

History

On October 1, 2007, Greyhound’s parent company, Laidlaw International, was acquired by FirstGroup plc of the United Kingdom. Dave Leach becomes president and CEO as Steve Gorman steps down.[1]

In 2008, Greyhound partnered with Peter Pan Bus Lines to launch a new premium low-cost service, BoltBus which market fares starting at $1. Buses feature amenities such as free Wi-Fi, power outlets and extra legroom. In 2009, Greyhound expanded these amenities to new and refurbished coaches in the regular fleet. These new coaches began operating between the Northeast cities of Boston, New York, and Washington as well as into the Canadian cities of Montreal and Toronto. These buses also29-O feature a completely new livery as part of Greyhound overhaul of their look.

Also, in 2008, Greyhound had partnered with New York Trailways to offer limited-stop, deep-discounted service on their NeOn bus service. The moniker "NeOn" took the first two letters of "New York" and "Ontario" to create its name. Originally, service was offered twice daily in each direction, between Toronto and New York City, using Penn Station in New York as an originating point, instead of the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Service was also later extended between other cities, including Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Binghamton, thereby lengthening the total time between terminals. Service has since been absorbed back into conventional Greyhound and New York Trailways service, however, buses with NeOn branding may show on New York Trailways buses from time to time.

Former subsidiaries of Greyhound USA include: Carolina Trailways, which was acquired in 1997; Vermont Transit Lines, which was acquired in 1975; and Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma Coaches, which was acquired in 1987.[1] They ceased operations and were consolidated into Greyhound in April 2008.[2][3]

In April 2011, Greyhound again teamed up with Peter Pan Bus Lines to form a Greyhound Express route from Boston to New York City.[4]

Ownership of Greyhound passed to German-based FlixMobility, parent company of FlixBus, in late 2021.[5]
