Metro Transit (Minnesota) 7110-7128 were Gillig Low Floor 40' HEV (G30D102N4) buses built in 2007. Originally built for Rochester-Genesee RTA, these buses were diverted to Metro Transit shortly after the I-35W Mississippi River bridge collapse.

History

In May 2007, Rochester-Gennessee RTA took delivery of what was to be their first hybrid buses. One of those buses was unveiled at an event in Rochester in June 2007.[1] However, the FTA withheld funding needed to purchase the buses as a penalty for the agency continuing to illegally operate school service[2]. As a result, RGRTA no longer had a need - and was unable to pay for the buses - and as a result, diverted the order to Metro Transit in November 2007.

Of the buses from this series, only 901 (renumbered 7121) was delivered to RGRTA. 901 was returned to Gillig in November 2007, retrofitted to Metro Transit specifications, and delivered to Metro Transit.

The buses were purchased for $557,000 each to augment transit service in light of the I-35W Mississippi River Bridge collapse[3]. The buses were unveiled at an event in Minneapolis on November 16, 2007 and entered service on November 19, 2007.[4]

These buses were retired between December 2019 and February 2020. Some units were auctioned off in a non-operational state in that period, while the rest of the fleet is either being stored adjacent to Heywood Garage near Downtown Minneapolis or being decommissioned at South Garage in the Unorganized Territory of Fort Snelling.
