The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, also known as Houston METRO or simply METRO, is the transit provider for Houston, Texas.

METRO has a current active fleet of 1,405 ACTIVE buses (as of 1/31/2018), which includes 7 Gillig BRT Plus CNG buses, 711 40' conventional transit buses (diesel, hybrid, and CNG models), 399 45' MCI commuter buses (diesel and hybrid models), 88 60' articulated buses (diesel), and 162 paratransit (METROLift) vehicles. METRO also has 38 Arboc Spirit of Mobility models that are used on low ridership routes.

  • Some units delivered with Voith transmissions were later replaced with Allison HT-748 ATEC transmissions in the 1990's.
  • Retired circa 1997-1999; around 79 Eagles were auctioned off in November 1999.
  • 1322 was kept as a historic bus. It was auctioned off on 3/4/2008 after sitting for over 10 years. It was bought by a reseller or scrapper.
  • 1 unit (with a Voith trans.) was bought by a private owner circa late 1990's/early 2000's and was converted into an RV.[4][5]

  • They were the only 286's besides the 1977 prototype to be spec'd with single headlights.

  • 1447 was found in between Navasota, TX & Anderson, TX on 1/17/2014.[6] It was sitting in the same spot since at least 2005. It remains externally intact as 2021.[7][8]
