The Optare Olympus is a low floor double deck body constructed using the Alcan “System 5430” heavy-duty extruded aluminium alloy sections. The Olympus was originally introduced in 2006 by East Lancashire Coachbuilders. When East Lancs was bought by the Darwen Group, the Olympus became a Darwen product, and finally an Optare product in 2008.

The roof and intermediate roof structures are constructed using Alcan's Airex foam composite to reduce overall vehicle weight. It is available on the Alexander Dennis Enviro400, Scania N230UD, and Volvo B9TL chassis. In late June 2009, two tri-axle Olympus buses on the Volvo B9TL chassis were delivered to Tyrers in Adlington, England.[1]

Optare announced in September 2009, that an integrated option using Optare's own chassis for the Olympus is available.[2] In April 2010, Optare announced they have finished the design stage of the integral Olympus, using their own chassis. This version boasts a lower weight with use composite materials, increased fuel economy, and ease of maintainability with a removable powertrain package. The engine of choice for the integral design is the six cylinder Mercedes-Benz OM 906 LA. The integral also boasts costefectiveness in using quality components obtaind at a low cost. The inegral model is expected to complete all final testing during the second quarter of 2010, with initial production starting in September that year.[3]

In the same April 2010 press release detailing the integral Olympus, a rendering appeared of an Olympus with a restyled low front. This consisted of a more curved central portion and bumpers with headlights and accents taken from the Optare Solo SR. The bottom of the first window on either side of the upper deck also no linger dipped towards the destination sign, and instead ran straigh.
