Rutgers University provides a zero-fare shuttle service in its New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden campuses. It is the second-largest transit system in New Jersey (after NJ Transit) and one of the largest university transit systems in the United States. The service is operated by Transdev.

History

  • Suburban Transit operated the service from 1961 until June 30, 2001.
  • Academy Bus Lines provided the bus service from July 1, 2001 to June 30, 2011.
  • On October 21, 2010, Rutgers awarded a 5-year contract to First Transit with an option to extend up to 15 years for the operation of New Brunswick Campus shuttle system, which went into effect on July 1, 2011. First Transit was selected because their bid was the lowest. The contract was renewed for 5 years in June 2014 and June 2021. First Transit expanded their bus service to the Newark Campus beginning September 1, 2014; to Camden Campus since September 1, 2019.[1][2] After Transdev completed the acquisition of First Transit on March 7, 2023, all current First Transit contracts were transferred to Transdev.[3]
