History
Order
This is the third batch of Next Generation hybrids ordered by the TTC. In 2007, the TTC issued an RFP for a contract for diesel and/or hybrid buses. Both Orion and New Flyer submitted bids. Orion's bid was found to be the lowest and therefore was awarded the contract, C32PY08704, in December 2007 for 130 NG HEVs.
These buses are largely identical to the previous Next Generation hybrids delivered to the TTC; however, a major difference is that this batch features all-yellow stanchions and an additional stop request sign above the driver's window (as in the Old Generation). The previous batches of NGs were later equipped with this second stop request sign, and some OGs also received similar signs.
These buses were delivered with bike racks and CCTV cameras. The buses delivered earlier in 2009 had driver barriers installed at the garage, but later buses came with them installed. In late summer 2009, the passenger windows of this series and the other TTC NGs began receiving screws through the window latch so that the window cannot open. The TTC has not explicitly stated the reasoning for the action. It can be assumed, based on an NHTSA recall, that the extra screws are a short-term solution to address the potential of the tip-in transom falling into the bus as the screws holding it originally may loosen.[1] A more permanent solution is being installed on the buses. This consists of two rectangular brackets installed at the bottom corner of the transom. When the brackets are installed, the window is unscrewed. Most buses started receiving this in early 2010.
Modifications
In February 2019, this series began getting the new Computer-Aided Dispatch and Automatic Vehicle Location (CAD/AVL) Vehicle Information System and Integrated Operations Network (VISION) system. The following units were the only ones to receive VISION: 1701, 1703, 1706-1707, 1710, 1712-1716, 1718-1721, 1724-1728, 1730-1733, 1735, 1738, 1741, 1743-1745, 1748, 1752.
Deliveries History
This series was originally delivered to Malvern and Wilson divisions.
Movement History
In 2014, several units were temporarily transferred to Arrow. In Summer 2015, units at arrow are transferred to Wilson. In 2018, the remaining units at Wilson were transferred to Malvern. In June 2019, 1818 and 1829 were temporarily transferred to Arrow.

Retirement
The TTC originally planned for these buses to have an 18-year lifespan, however they began facing challenges as the buses approached their mid-life. More frequent failure of components, particularly in the buses' propulsion system, meant an escalating cost of ownership.[2] Beginning in 2018, as the TTC started taking delivery of new buses from Nova Bus, they started to retire buses from this series. Typically, when a major component such as the engine or traction motor fails and is deemed uneconomical to repair, the bus is retired. The final unit (#1728) operated in revenue service on December 28th, 2019 on route 939 Finch Express. By the end of December 2019, all units from this series were retired.
