Toronto Transit Commission 9370-9394
Toronto Transit Commission 9370-9394 were CNG 05.501 Orion V built by Orion Bus Industries. Being delivered between July 1990 and September 1991, they were based on Wilson, and remained there until March 2005 when all were withdrawn from service.
Besides the fact that these were the first to be Compressed Natural Gas powered for TTC, they were originally part of a fifty-unit CNG demonstration program administered by the Province of Ontario. Out of those fifty units, besides these twenty-five belonging to TTC, fifteen of them belonged to the Hamilton Street Railway and are now retired as of March 8, 2007. Ten others, which were later converted to diesel fuel, belonged to Mississauga Transit and the very last few are scheduled to be retired by late-2009.
A ZF Ecomat HP590 transmission was initially part of the specifications but later caused mechanical problems, therefore an Allison World B400R 5 speed transmission was required to replace the original ZF transmissions.
The Commission had scheduled a twelve-year rebuild taking place in 1998. However, though the operation was performed on 9370, TTC decided that these weren't worth to be rebuilt, due to structural failures that occured during that time and later on. TTC was wishing to sell these along with fifty GM New Looks and fourty-three Flyer D901s.
All were withdrawn from service by March 2005. However, 9371-9372, 9374-9375, 9377, 9387, 9389, and 9391 were actually eight out of nine buses scheduled to be exported to the Dominican Republic for future service. They were parked near Esther Shiner Stadium waiting for departure, but were later vandalized.
