Trailways of New York operates scheduled bus service through out the state of New York and into Canada (Ontario and Quebec) through three divisions: Adirondack Trailways, Pine Hill Trailways, and New York Trailways. The registered operating companies for those divisions are Adirondack Transit Lines[1], Pine Hill-Kingston Bus Corporation[2] and Passenger Bus Corporation[3].

History

In 1926, John Van Gonsic, Sr. launched the Rip Van Winkle Line between Kingston and New York City in the state of New York with service extended to the northern Hudson Valley and Capital Region in the mid-1930s. The change of the company's name to Adirondack Transit Lines to more accurately illustrated their service to the rural upstate New York area. In 1937, Adirondack Transit Lines became part of the Trailways Transportation System and became known as Adirondack Trailways.

In 1965, John Van Gonsic, Jr (successor to John Van Gonsic, Sr.) formed Pine Hill Trailways to expand service into the Catskill Mountain region. Eugene J. Berardi, Sr. soon took over control of Pine Hill Trailways until his death four years later. Control was passed to his wife Cynthia Van Gonsic Berardi. In 1988, the company was passed to her son, Eugene J. Berardi, Jr.

Adirondack Trailways and Pine Hill Trailways acquired Empire Trailways in 1994, and after the merger, became known as New York Trailways. Service was operated along the Albany-Buffalo corridor. In 1996, Adirondack Trailways began operating scheduled service to Montreal. Later, expansions to service were made between Albany and Binghamton as well as service to Watertown, Massena and other North Country communities.

NeOn Bus

NeOn Bus is a partnership between Trailways of New York, Greyhound Lines and Greyhound Canada. Service started when Coach USA's discount bus carrier Megabus started their Northeast hub in New York on May 30, 2008. NeOn Bus was created as a no-frills intercity bus service and to compete with the Megabus M24 route. Originally there were only two departures in both Toronto and New York with a departure in the morning and another in the evening. There were no stop overs between the two cities in which it was an express service. Operations were between street stops at Penn Station in New York and the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto. A year later on into operation; Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Binghamton were added as stop overs for the purpose of increasing ridership. NeOn Bus had a slogan known as "Premium Service for as low as $1" but now has been changed to "Premium Service at an Everyday Low Price" and most fares start at 50% off from the regular fare. Today, NeOn Bus has expanded the concept to Montreal, PQ with more stop overs added such as Albany, Buffalo Airport, Plattsburgh and Utica also existing Trailways of New York buses have the "NeOn" decals. The Toronto stop was moved to the Toronto Coach Terminal and as well the New York-bound bus now terminates at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. All NeOn branded coaches are equipped with Wi-Fi and power outlets at each seat.
