The buses run in the "ready reserve" fleet as of 2018, helping cover for the shortage caused by the "near-storage" status of the NABI 60-BRT CNG buses and helping cover the increased fleet size requirements because of the Metrorail Blue/Yellow line shutdown. When Cinder Bed garage opened, these buses were brought back to service to help an increase of bus shortages for multiple divisions for Bladensburg, Montgomery, Shepherd Parkway, and Landover. Since summer 2019, these buses were only used as a reserve fleet and employee shuttles most notably from Montgomery divisions. These buses were quietly retired during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic and sent for scrap. The 2020 XD40s were expected to fully replace the Orion V high floor buses.
