The ZF AS Tronic is a 12-speed automated manual transmission. The AS Tronic was originally offered as a 10 speed when introduced to North America in 2004, but Van Hool used the 12 speed version in their North American coaches. Other North American Manufacturers followed a few years later. It was billed as performing like an automatic transmission, but also allows the driver to switch from a manual mode at any time. As it is a manual transmission, it also lacks the torque converter and its weight - an AS Tronic is advertised as weighing 500 pounds less than a comparable automatic transmission. Some coach operators are choosing this transmission as it allows for improved fuel economy over an automatic transmission.
