The Alexander Dennis Enviro400H is the diesel-electric hybrid version of the Enviro400. It was unveiled on November 4, 2008 at the Euro Bus Expo in Birmingham, UK.

Design

The Enviro400H was launched as an integral bus and used BAE Systems's series hybrid drive. The chassis was later available with an open-top body supplied from UNVI. In 2015, Stagecoach Group became the first to take delivery of the Enviro400H on the Volvo B5L chassis. Both the Enviro400H chassis and B5L chassis are capable of fully electric operation for short periods of time. Alexander Dennis calls this "virtual electric" operation.

The Euro 6 Enviro400H was introduced in 2014 with the Euro 6 Enviro400. The bus features a new look, new heating and ventilation system, new glazing system, decreased weight, and increased seating capacity. Under a Major Model Change project, Alexander Dennis worked with over 70 operators in a three-year period to improve the design of the Enviro400.

Enviro400H City

At Coach & Bus Live 2015, Alexander Dennis launched the Enviro400H City. It is aimed at the London market and was developed in collaboration with Transport for London (TfL). TfL approached various bus manufacturers to design a bus that built upon the design of the New Routemaster. Wrightbus built further on their New Routemaster and launched the SRM in early 2016.

The Enviro400H City draws its aesthetic from the new Enviro200 and New Routemaster. It has a rounder appearance, evoking the iconic Routemaster, and has a fully glazed staircase. Inside, the bus shares other aspects of the New Routemaster to give passengers a feeling of commonality between the two buses.[1] A unique seat fabric designed by Camira incorporates a traditional block pattern in grey and red interspersed with the roundel logo.

The first 19 buses were built for Arriva London and entered service at the end of 2015.

Enviro400ER

In August 2019, Alexander Dennis launched the Enviro400ER (Electric Range). It can operate for up to three miles in all-electric mode with geofenced capability. The 32 kilowatt hour capacity energy storage system does not need to be charged externally, avoiding added infrastructure needs. Though, if desired, the bus can be plugged into the grid for charging. Brighton & Hove, part of Go-Ahead Group, was the first to order the Enviro400ER. The 30 will operate on route 5 and will operate in zero emissions mode in the centre of Brighton.[2]

Enviro400VE

Alexander Dennis offers the "Virtual Electric" option on the Enviro400H. The Enviro400VE is able to operate up to 80 percent of the time in fully-electric mode where the engine is shut off. This can be coordinated with GPS. An inductive charging system can supplement the diesel engine in recharging the batteries. The first Enviro400VE buses entered service with Tower Transit in London in 2015.
