National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak) 200-409 were 1976-1988 EMD F40PH/F40PHR locomotives.

History

Order/delivery

Routes

F40PH locomotives were common on all diesel routes in the system, both long- and short-distance routes.

Their last regular assignment was on the Maple Leaf, as VIA Rail crews were not trained on the Genesis series locomotives until VIA acquired their own in 2001.

Retirement

Amtrak retired their last powered F40PH units in 2003-2004. 22 retired units had their the prime mover, traction motors, and HEP generator removed, and were converted into non-powered control units (NPCU) in the mid-1990s; most of these NPCUs remain on the roster. An additional unit (406) was converted into a NPCU in 2011 for the 40th anniversary train, but was not renumbered.

Most units have been sold to other operators, including leasing companies, tourist railroads, commuter systems, and even some predominately freight railroads. Many of these units have been rebuilt, and many are still in service today.
