Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County 1600-1699
Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County 1600-1699 were 1979-1980 Grumman Flxible 40102-8-1 buses. These buses were rebuilt by Flxible from various buses in the 800-1126 series. The rebuilds were done between late 1982 to early 1983, with delivery of the rebuilt buses taking place throughout January 1983.
They received full VIN numbers, which replaced their old serial numbers. They also had the wheelchair lifts removed or sealed up, due to the unreliability of the lifts. The original Luminator LIDS destination signs were replaced with Vultron Transdot signs. They also received numerous structural upgrades, which essentially made the buses Flxible Metros.
Retirement for these buses started in 1995 and the last buses were retired in 1997, along side the Crown Ikarus 286 buses. Approximately 50 of the buses in Metro's reserve fleet were sent to Atlanta, to participate in the 1996 Olympics. It is unknown if Metro took back the buses.
