Windham Region Transit District, or WRTD, is a rural bus system serving the towns in New London County, eastern Tolland County, western Windham County in Connecticut.

History

The Windham Region Transit District was formed in 1979 to provide public transit service to the towns of Windham, Mansfield, and Coventry, CT, with Ashford and Columbia soon joining afterwards. WRTD became the primary funder/operator of Dial-A-Ride service in its service area by July 1981, though such service had been operated in the area since Fall 1976. Fixed route services were introduced later that year in October 1981 (Storrs-Willimantic, now route 674). Local Willimantic service was introduced in March 1989 (now routes 671 and 672), commuter service to Foxwoods Casino in April 2000 (now route 991) and commuter service to Danielson in September 2007 (now route 993).
