Connecticut Transit, or CTtransit, is the transit system serving much of the state of Connecticut. It is a division of the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

History

CTtransit began operations in 1976 under management by David Lee. Lee retired at the end of 2017, with Cole Pouliot taking over as the new general manager.

Divisions

CTtransit provides bus service via contract providers for seven different metropolitan areas in the state, mostly concentrated in Hartford and New Haven counties.

Hartford Division

  • Phone: 860-525-9181

Providing local and express bus service within Hartford County. First Transit was the contractor until 12/30/2022. RATP Dev is the new contractor starting on 12/31/2022 for a four-year contract, with two, 2-year extensions.[1]

New Britain and Bristol Divisions

  • New Britain Transportation Company:

New Haven Division

  • Address: 2061 State St., Hamden, CT 06517
  • Phone: 203-624-0151

Serving the city of New Haven and nearby suburbs. First Transit was the contractor until 12/30/2022. RATP Dev is the new contractor starting on 12/31/2022 for a four-year contract, with two, 2-year extensions.[2]

Stamford Division

  • Address: 26 Elm Ct., Stamford, CT 06902
  • Phone: 203-327-7433

Serving the Stamford area. First Transit was the contractor until 12/30/2022. RATP Dev is the new contractor starting on 12/31/2022 for a four-year contract, with two, 2-year extensions.[3]

  • Phone: 203-753-2538

Serving the cities of Meriden, Wallingford and Waterbury. The contractor is Northeast Transportation Company.

Routes

  • Routes & Schedules
    • Routes 903 and 913 are operated by Collins Bus Service.
    • Routes 918 and 950 are operated by Peter Pan of Rocky Hill.
    • Routes 501-507, 512, 541-543 are operated by New Britain Transportation.
    • Routes 41, 509, 510, 919, 921, 928 are operated by DATTCO of New Britain.
    • Routes 291-292, 401-499, & 561-566 are operated by Northeast Transportation.

Fares

Basic fares and passes are offered at the Customer Service outlets and on the web, but bus fareboxes and the CTfastrak ticket vending machines offer a wider variety of options. When getting a special kind of ticket (i.e. senior day pass), passengers are expected to explicitly make this request to the operator.

Express fares are categorized by 5 different zones (Zones A-E or 1-5). When express fares are paired with valid local transfers, the express fare is discounted slightly, so the rider only has to pay the difference between local and specified zone fare (i.e. Zone C fare is $4.10, so rider would pay $2.45 with local transfer).

CTtransit introduced a smart card for easier traveling called "GoCT" (in conjunction with Scheidt & Bachmann fare consoles) in late 2018. The card has a base cost of $2 (for activation), and any amount between $10-500 can be loaded onto the card for travel. As of 2020, the card can only be used on CTtransit buses (all other systems use GFI fareboxes, or simple mechanical devices devoid of any electronics which are incompatible). GoCT cards can be ordered online and mailed to an address of your choice, purchased at licensed vendors (CVS, Walgreens, 7/11), or at customer service booths in Hartford, New Haven, or Stamford.
