History
Service was contracted out to the Toronto Transit Commission by Markham Transit. This involved TTC operating the buses and collecting the fares, but Markham Transit paying for any losses in running the service. A TTC fare was required for passengers travelling south of Steeles Avenue East, but only a Markham fare was required if the entire trip was north of Steeles Avenue East. When Markham Transit was acquired by York Region Transit, the contract was picked up as well with similar conditions.
On May 12, 2002, service hours were expanded on Saturdays and new service was introduced on Sundays.
Route 68B originally operated to 16th Avenue looping via 16th Avenue, Village Parkway, and Carlton Road. On November 24, 2002, with the opening of the Sheppard Subway, the TTC decided to experiment with direct service to northern routes from Don Mills Station. This included routes 24C/D, 67B, and 68B. Route 68B was removed and was replaced with a new route 268 Warden North which ran from Don Mills Station along Sheppard Avenue East to Warden Avenue, and north to 16th Avenue. The looping at 16th Avenue was also changed; service looped via 16th Avenue, Village Gate Drive, and Calvert Road.
Unfortunately, this experiment was short-lived as it was deemed a failure and route 68B was restored during all times on September 5, 2004. However, the looping used by the former route 268 remained to be used by the resurrected 68B. On September 4, 2005, service was extended north to Angus Glen Community Centre on Major Mackenzie Drive east of Warden Avenue.
Route 68B was declared fully accessible in December 2012.
