History

These buses were ordered in November 2013 as options through the Metropolitan Council's then-existing contract with Gillig.[1]

These buses replaced 2002 New Flyer D35LFs 4121-4126, as well as 2003 Gillig Low Floors 4337-4348.

These buses were also the first MVTA buses to feature new livery colors, with both orange and black rooflines added in addition to the existing forest green.

DAS Testing

In March 2017, the US Department of Transportation Federal Transportation Administration (FTA) sponsored MVTA as it piloted a second-generation Driver's Assistance System[2] (referred to as DAS), for Bus-on-Shoulder operations along the Cedar Avenue (MN Highway 77). This second iteration (known as Gen2) was developed by MTS Systems Corporation of Eden Prairie, Minnesota. It was a GPS-based technology suite which would provide lane position feedback to the driver via LED warning lights embedded in the dashboard, warning icons on a TRU-Vu LCD touch screen, and seat vibrations. Included in the suite was the addition of LIDAR technology for front and side collision sensing. The test lasted from March 2017 until February 2018, after which the results were evaluated.

This was the second time MVTA had experimented with a Driver's Assistance System[3], the first of which was developed by the Intelligent Vehicles Laboratory (IV Lab) at the University of Minnesota, which featured a see-through Heads-Up Display (HUD) positioned in front of the driver as well as a 'Virtual Mirror' and haptic feedback in the steering wheel. 10 buses were fitted with the system (known as Gen1), which were members of the 4700-series 40' Gillig Low Floor buses, identifiable by their "BUS2.0" wrap.

Upon the completion of "Gen2" testing, the 3 LIDAR units remain attached to the buses, with one mounted on the driver's side below the bike rack, and one unit on each side of the bus behind the front axle.
