Route Details

The current routing of Route 16

Route 16 is a local route that travels from Main through Centretown, Sandy Hill and ends at Westboro Station, with the exception of Sunday's, where it'll end/start at Tunney's Pasture Station.

History

July 14th, 1996

  • Service will be removed from Tunney's Pasture Station in the evenings and on weekends where buses will operate via Scott and Holland instead.

August 29th, 1999

  • Route is extended to Lincoln Fields station from Carlingwood Mall to improve connections and reduce transfers for customers.

April 22nd, 2001

  • Will travel eastbound from Rideau Centre via Nicholas, Daly and Waller to Laurier Station and its regular route.

September 1st, 2002

  • On Saturdays, the last westbound trip from the Rehabilitation Centre will be cancelled due to low ridership.

June 27th, 2004

  • No weekend service before 9 AM.

September 4th, 2004

  • Eastbound service through downtown will operate from Slater via Kent to Queen Street, instead of via Bay.
  • No weekend service after 7 PM.

September 24th, 2004

  • Will return to its original eastbound routing via Bay instead of Kent.
  • Will no longer serve the bus stop on Kent, but will be served by the bus stops on Bay and on Queen near Kent.

June 26th, 2005

  • Service before 6:30 AM, Monday to Friday, and after 7 PM on Saturdays is reinstated.

September 6th, 2009

  • Route is extended to serve Britannia replacing Routes 18 and 50. More trips are added during rush hour to replace a portion of Routes 15 and 50.

September 4th, 2011

  • Will be revised to travel from Lees Station across Pretoria Bridge to end at Metcalfe and Catherine and will no longer operate south of Lees to the hospital complex.
  • Service along Main Street will be provided by Route 5, available on Elgin, and service to the hospitals will be available on Route 106 at Hurdman Station.
  • The current temporary detour along Wellington and Richmond Road, between Holland and Kirkwood, will become permanent.

January 8th, 2012

  • Route will be enhanced with a few new trips, Monday to Friday, that will provide residents in Sandy Hill with a connection to Rideau Street.
  • Two trips will operate in the morning from Lees Station to the Rideau Centre via Waller, Besserer and Dalhousie.
  • In the early afternoon, two trips will operate in the reverse direction from the Rideau Centre via Wellington, Elgin and Mackenzie King Bridge.
  • Buses will sign 16X Rideau Centre and 16X Sandy Hill respectively.

April 22nd, 2012

  • Route 16X will be modified to travel northbound from King Edward via Wilbrod, Friel, Laurier, Charlotte and Rideau Street to the Rideau Centre, instead of via Waller and Besserer, in order to provide customers with improved access to Rideau Street.
  • Route 16X will also have a new afternoon trip added between Lees Station and Rideau Street in both directions for improved connections.

April 21st, 2013

  • Route will be modified to serve the north end of Main Street to Saint Paul University, improving community and student connections. Buses will sign "Main" and will serve the area every 30 minutes for most periods, seven days a week.
  • Route will no longer serve Hawthorne Street from west to Main Street at Elgin Street, where delays caused by traffic congestion are frequent, which will improve the reliability of the service.
  • Route 5 will continue to connect Elgin Street to Main Street.
  • Route will also offer limited service to the Ottawa Hospital General Campus, which will replace the current 5X service. Two trips will be made from Monday to Friday in each direction. Buses will sign "Hospital". These trips will not go to Saint Pauls University.

September 6th, 2015

  • Trip from the Youville Centre will be adjusted according to the Youville Centre's bell time. The trip will arrive at the Youville Centre at 3 PM instead of at 2:40 PM and will leave at 3:10 PM instead of 2:50 PM.

December 20th, 2015

  • Connects Lees Station with downtown.
  • Route 85 also offers direct service from Lees Station (stop 4C) to downtown.
  • On weekends, Route 85 starts earlier in the morning and operates until later in the evening

April 24th, 2016

  • The last weekday trips in both directions were cancelled due to low ridership.

May 16th, 2016

  • No longer serves Laurier Station.
  • Service on these routes is available nearby on Laurier Ave, at Cumberland, and at Mackenzie King Station.
  • This change improves traffic flow on Laurier and reduces the potential for delay to other westbound service.

September 4th, 2016

  • Tunney's Pasture is now listed as a time point.

September 2nd, 2018

  • Route is slightly revised to travel via Queen and Elgin streets instead of Wellington to serve the new Parliament LRT station.

October 6th, 2019

  • Will be split into two routes at Tunney's Pasture: Route 51 between Britannia and Tunney's Pasture; Route 16 between Main and Tunney's Pasture.
  • Route will be extended to Westboro Station via Westboro Beach, replacing a portion of Route 81.

November 25th, 2019

  • Route will operate every 15 minutes during the day on weekdays instead of every 30 minutes. This will provide seniors and volunteers at The Good Companions with more options for travel.

March 30th, 2020

  • Due to low ridership from the COVID-19 outbreak. Service will be reduced to:
  • Every 30 to 60 minutes in the morning peak period and evenings.
  • Every 30 minutes in the midday and afternoon peak period.

May 3rd, 2020

  • Line 2 train service at Bayview will be replaced with Line 2 Bus service in preparations for the launch of Stage 2 LRT in 2022.

June 28th, 2020

  • Will be in service and will operate the same route network that was in place from January to March 2020, with some seasonal adjustments.

August 30th, 2020

  • Some trips will be temporarily suspended to reflect reduced ridership.

December 20th, 2020

  • All trips, in both directions, will follow a new routing due to the removal of a temporary bus turnaround on Hazel Street.
  • Westboro trips take Hazel St. to Deschatelets Ave., then to Oblats Ave., then to Main St.; Main trips take Main St. to Hazel St.

April 24th, 2022

  • The special afternoon trip from the Youville Centre will be adjusted to start at 2:40 PM to better accommodate the bell time.
