1972

  • August 1 - Ottawa Transportation Commission (OTC) becomes the Ottawa-Carleton Regional Transit Commission (OC Transpo), extending service into the neighbouring municipalities of Nepean, Gloucester, Cumberland, and Kanata. The new Transit Commission consists of 5 members, Regional Chair Denis Coolican and the mayors of Ottawa, Gloucester, Nepean and Vanier. A total deficit of $1,121,167, plus a consultant's study of extended service which cost $237,500, is inherited by the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton (R.M.O.C.). Provincial subsidies and National Capital Commission (N.C.C.) contributions cut the figure to $771,076. The City of Ottawa took 86% of the former OTC deficit ($665,570). The rest, $105,506, was divided between the Township of Nepean ($57,006), City of Vanier ($25,300), Township of Gloucester ($17,500), and the Village of Rockcliffe Park ($5,700)[1]. All municipalities which OC Transpo will now serve

1973

  • Eleven km of exclusive bus lanes are introduced to Ottawa streets

  • Leeds Garage is opened
  • March 4 - The Federal Government implements "Flexible working hours" for their office workers downtown to spread out peak hour commuting demand throughout a larger window, rather than having all the federal office workers come into downtown all at the same time. This was lobbied to the federal government by OC Transpo, as a way to better use resources while delivering a more reliable service during peak hours. This measure was also successful in increasing the total number of commuters brought into downtown by transit, which in turn reduced the number of car commuters into downtown. [2]

1975

  • October 23 - An award of $80,300 for the family of a dead OC Transpo bus operator (32 year-old Donald Aubé, operator #523) is upheld in court, whom died after a collision with a car who ran a red light at Albert & Metcalfe at 1:10 AM on March 14, 1972 while deadheading back to Champagne Garage. The bus operator was thrown from the bus and pinned between the wreck and a steel bar supporting a billboard. He died shortly after.
