The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is the largest transit authority in Canada. It operates bus, streetcar, and subway service in the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The TTC also provides Wheel-Trans, a door-to-door service for those with disabilities who have trouble using the conventional system. Part of the Wheel-Trans division is Community Bus, which uses smaller buses on a looping route and is primarily geared towards seniors.

Fares

Exact fare is required as operators do not carry change. Presto readers are installed on all buses, streetcars, and subway stations.

Adults must meet specific eligibility requirements set out by the City of Toronto to qualify for reduced fares under the Fair Pass Transit Discount Program.

History

The Toronto Transit Commission was formed as the Toronto Transportation Commission in 1921 as a consolidation of private streetcar lines and the public Toronto Civic Railways. The Toronto Transportation Commission was renamed the Toronto Transit Commission on January 1, 1954, and it was placed under the jurisdiction of the newly formed Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto.[1] The TTC became the sole provider of public transit in Metro Toronto after acquiring the privately owned Danforth Bus Lines, Hollinger Bus Lines, Roseland Bus Lines, and West York Coach Lines.[2]

Current fleet roster

As of December 29, 2019, the TTC has approximately 2563 buses (conventional/wheel-trans/community), 204 streetcars, and 851 subway cars in the active fleet. The entire surface fleet (excluding three of the five historic streetcars and one historical bus) features the Surface Vehicle Automated Stop Announcement System (SVASAS), Vehicle Information System & Integrated Operations Network (VISION), and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras. All buses except the Wheel-Trans vehicles, Community Buses and TTC1 have bicycle racks. All subway cars have Automated Stop Announcements and CCTV cameras.

  • ES-0 to ES-5 reassigned from 7900-7905 for Toronto Police Service in August 2018, used for moving officers during large events, and utilized as roadblocks during street closures.
  • ES-0 to ES-5 were originally given an all-over dark metallic grey livery (matching the Toronto Police cruisers) and a police-style push bar. Push bar removed and buses were repainted into a greyscale LFLRV livery in November 2018.
  • ES-1(:1) and ES-4(:1) retired after being vandalized during the Toronto Raptors NBA Championship celebration.

The TTC operates 3 subway lines as part of its rapid transit network. The lines are numbered 1, 2, & 4. The 4 lines and its ridership as of 2018 are as follows:

The TTC operates 190 surface routes: 16 of which run streetcars and 174 of which run buses. All but two of these routes (99 Arrow Rd and 171 Mount Dennis) connect to the rapid transit network. The top 20 busiest surface routes, based on ridership as of 2018, are as follows:

Connections

The TTC connects to many other transit agencies. The TTC connects with York Region Transit to the north; Durham Region Transit (formerly Ajax Pickering Transit Authority) to the east; MiWay (formerly Mississauga Transit) to the west; and Brampton Transit to the north-west.

GO Transit interconnects all of the mentioned transit agencies and is centered around Toronto Union Station.
