Société de transport de Montréal Centre de transport Stinson
Centre de transport Stinson (50) is an STM maintenance and administrative facility, located at 635 rue Stinson, Montréal, Québec, in the borough of Saint-Laurent.
Overview
The 38,400 square-metre, two-storey building is able to house 200 rigid and 100 articulated buses. The project and funding was announced in November 2011. Transports Québec funded 75 percent of the $160 million cost, with the rest coming from the STM. Construction was expected to start in June 2012 and completion of the facility was expected in the fall of 2013.[1]
The STM surpassed the 400 million rider mark in 2011. To meet the projected 40 per cent increase in ridership in the 2020 Plan, it was recommended service be improved by 32%. The bus fleet would therefore have to be expanded by 25% from 1680 to 2100 buses. This new facility would aid in storing the buses needed. The facility would also be capable of maintaining and storing hybrid buses, electric buses, and electric midibuses.[2]
Stinson Centre is LEED Gold certified, the first building to achieve this in Canada. The facility minimized effects on surface water and the surrounding environment during construction. Where possible, the materials used in this facility were from local sources. To mitigate disruption to residences around the facility, the path of buses is kept well within the perimeter of the facility. There is more use of natural lighting within the building with spaces for light to shine through over the maintenance and storage area, as well as large windows in the administration section. The building features a green roof with more green spaces around the building and a communal green space near the offices. A system recovers a portion of graywater and rainwater, and another system recovers 85 percent of heat generated.[3]
The facility begun operation on January 6, 2014.[4]
A nearby industrial facility, at 380 rue Stinson, was leased for 5 years in order to store part of 300 buses purchased under the Plante administration. The maintenance is performed at CT Stinson. [5]
