Subway trains in Greenwood Yard

Greenwood Yard is one of 4 TTC Rapid Transit yards. It is located west of Greenwood Avenue south of Danforth Avenue, or between Donlands and Greenwood Stations. It was built in 1965, when the Bloor-Danforth Subway was being built. It was needed to store the extra trains required for the new line, as Davisville was at capacity, and subway mileage was going to double.

McCowan Yard is a subdivision of Greenwood, storing all the trains that operate on Line 3 Scarborough. Since McCowan doesn't have facilities for anything beyond cleaning and minor repair, the cars are trucked to Greenwood for major repairs and overhauls. Danforth Garage also had close ties to Greenwood, owing to its close proximity, until Danforth's closure in 2002.

Greenwood Yard is also the heavy maintenance facility for the subway network. They do most of the major repairs to cars, including the mid-life refurbishment of subway cars.

Greenwood was built with a connecting spur from the nearby CN rail line into the property for delivery of subway cars via rail. Various orders of subway cars were delivered this way, at least into the H6 deliveries of the late 1980's. The spur is currently out of service, and the latest Toronto Rocket subway cars have been trucked on flatbeds to the TTC from Thunder Bay.
