McCowan Station is a rapid transit station operated by the Toronto Transit Commission in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located at 1275 McCowan Road, on the northeast corner of McCowan Road and Bushby Drive.

Station description

McCowan is a modest station. It had a set of doors facing McCowan directly underneath the SRT tracks. Inside is the collector's booth. North of the fare booth (leading into the unpaid area) is a door connecting to a covered walkway which connects to the west side of McCowan and highrise developments north and east of the station.

Inside the fare-paid area, the path splits into 2: the main passenger flow is up to the north, which leads to 2 long escalators (one up, one down) which leads up to the north platform, the one normally used for SRT service. The south one also heads up to the south platform, used for trains leaving service into nearby McCowan Yard. The south platform has one-way barriers preventing passengers from entering the platform, and contains only a staircase.

On the north platform, there is a small break room for drivers to use between trips, located near the west end.

There is an independent parking lot wrapping around Bushby Drive that is primarily used for SRT commuters.

History

McCowan station was one of the last stations to be built, as construction headed north and east from Kennedy. It opened with the rest of the line for revenue service. It's primary purpose was (and still is) to turn trains back west to Scarborough Centre and Kennedy stations. It also provides an alternative to Scarborough Centre, as passengers can claim a spot on the train before the large crowds waiting at Scarborough Centre Station get on.

Expansion plans will extend the SRT line past McCowan to Markham Road/Sheppard Avenue, meaning McCowan will not be used for turning back anymore. McCowan Yard will close, being replaced by a larger Bellamy Yard instead, as McCowan has no room for expansion. The nearby Bellamy Yard may mean the crossovers directly east and west of McCowan will cease to exist, as they have no real purpose.

Note that both these routes terminate at Scarborough Centre Station's bus terminal, so the connection with these routes is mostly useless.

Connections can be made to these buses at the corner of Bushby Drive/McCowan Road, near the station entrance.
