Russell Division, sometimes referred as Connaught, is one of the Toronto Transit Commission's three currently-operating streetcar divisions. Russell Carhouse is located at 1433 Queen Street East, on the southwest corner of Connaught Avenue and Queen Street East between Greenwood and Coxwell Avenues. The facility was originally built in 1913 by the Toronto Railway Company, then it was later rebuilt in 1924 by the TTC.[1]
History
- 1913 - Russell Carhouse was built and opened by the Toronto Railway Company to be used solely as a paint shop for the streetcar fleet.[2] The facility featured 6 stub tracks, all used for painting.[3]
- 1916 - The King Carhouse burns down, requiring the Russell Carhouse to be turned into an actual division.[4]
- 1922 - 1924 - The TTC takes over the site, and rebuilding of the facility starts.[5]
- December 13th, 1924 - Russell Carhouse re-opens as a division following full reconstruction.[6]
- 2015 - Reconstruction of the southern entrance and ladder tracks along Eastern Avenue takes place.[7] Renovations include concrete-embedded tracks, electric track switches, road separation, and new overhead.[8]
- September 2022 - Present - Construction to fully modernize Russell Carhouse has begun and is expected to be fully completed by 2028.[9] The project includes full replacement of the outdoor yard tracks with concrete-embedded tracks and switches, replacement of underground utilities (including a new stormwater retention management system), replacement of overhead lines to fully support pantograph operation, and general renovations to the Carhouse facilities (including an extension of the Carhouse itself) to fully support maintenance of the Flexity Outlook fleet.[10] Due to the construction, the fleet capacity at Russell Carhouse has significantly decreased and will be adjusted as the project progresses.
